The U2 made its first flight in August 1955. On October 14th, 1962, Major Richard S. Heyser piloting a U2C flew over Cuba and obtained the first photographs of the Soviet offensive missiles being installed there.
The U2R you are viewing is 40% larger than the original U2C.
During Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the U2Rs flew with a variety of sensors for High Resolution photography, Radar mapping, and Low light operations. Intelligence agencies, Field commanders, The Pentagon, and even the President used this information to identify military targets, enemy troop strengths, and battle damage assessments.
